Day 1 – Choosing a destination
The world is a very big and very cool place. There are currently 196 countries and approximately 7.1 billion people living on earth. For this project we are going to focus on just 10 countries across 6 continents – Canada (North America), Mexico (Central America), Chile (South America), England (Europe), Germany (Europe), South Africa (Africa), United Arab Emirates (Middle East), Japan (Asia), Malaysia (South-East Asia), and Australia (Australasia).
Please click on the ‘World Map’ tab on the main menu. It will bring you to a big map. One by one click on the names of the countries and ready the ‘Quick Facts’ about each place.
Activities
Activity 1
After you have read the quick facts about each place you must choose ONE country that you would like to ‘visit.’ On your blog post the name of the country and tell us why you have chosen to visit it. Please give, at least, two reasons for choosing the country.
I have chosen Australia because I have never been there . I have heard that when you go there you are never bored because there are so many things to do for example movie world,sea world,the beach,water park’s and even more. It is also really really hot there like fiji is. The only thing I would not like about it is all the not friendly animals like the nice ones are okay but the mean one’s like venomous spiders and alligators I would not like.
Activity 2
On Google, research the country that you have chosen to visit and write, in your own words, three interesting facts about that country. They must be facts that weren’t already provided on the World Map.
As of 2012, Australia has an estimated population of over 22 million people.Australia is the world's 6th largest country by area.Due to its large size and isolation from the rest of the world, Australia is sometimes known as the 'island continent'.
Bonus Activity
Write a letter to a friend or family member to tell them that you are going to visit your country of choice. In your letter, please tell them where you are going, why you have decided to go to the particular country and how long you will be away. Feel free to invite them to join you, if you’d like!
Dear Mum and dad,
I will be going to visit the country Australia. I have decided to go Australia because I have never been there before and I would like to experience it. I am going to be away for 6 weeks and 6 weeks only so no need to worry.

ReplyDeleteWelcome to the Summer Learning Journey. I am thrilled that you have joined us this year and chosen to visit Australia. It truly is a beautiful country with so much to see and do. It's quite large (being the 6th largest in the world) and most of the cities are located on the outskirts of the country (close to the ocean).
I have only had the chance to visit Brisbane and Sydney but I would love to get to Melbourne one day. Like you, I'm hoping to avoid the venomous spiders and the alligators when I go!
I hope that your mom and dad don't miss you too much while you are away. I'm sure that they will mostly be excited for you and will look forward to your return! You will have so many amazing stories to share with them :)

ReplyDeleteI'm Mark - a teacher working on the summer learning journey programme with Rachel! I am excited that you chose Australia as your country of study because I once lived there for 9 months! I lived on the Gold Coast in a place called Burleigh Heads. It is very hot like Fiji, and there are lots of dangerous animals as you say. We once had to call the animal control people to come get a very dangerous brown snake out of our garden! And the Golden Orb spiders are huge? (they lived on my deck and unfortunately sometimes made big webs over my pathway which I would walk into at night! So scary!! But it was still a nice place for the most part (and I love surfing, so living near the beach was awesome!)
I think you're right about it being an interesting place with lots to do, and it could be because there are so many people that live there. There is a lot more variety when it comes to shopping and eating out than we have here in New Zealand. It is only when we travel outside of New Zealand that we realise how small our country is, and how lucky we are that it hasn't been spoiled by overpopulation.
I'm excited to continue reading your blogs. I'll comment on each one, it looks like you have done five days worth, so this is going to be rather interesting to see how you progress.
