Animal Court Reflection by Carmen

Last week my group did a play we did the animal court. Now I am reflecting on what I did well.
I used the rubric below to reflect. Our literacy group made up the rubric that is down below. We all thought of ideas about what could be in the rubric and we picked the best 4 ideas. We used this to self-assess afterwards.
Hope you enjoy the video.

Lights Camera Action: Animal Court

Earlier this term we were practicing our fluency reading aloud with expression.
We each got a role in a short play from the school journals and had less than one week to practice and present each play.
We also created our own success criteria to explain just how we would be successful in this task.

Carmen's sentence structure

We have been learning about sentence structure.

The Egyptians believed that there was an after life after death, that they thought you needed your body to go. So they mummified the body.

Firstly the body was placed on a table. The embalmer, who cared for the dead, cut a slit in either side of the body. This was to take out the organs such as stomach, liver, intestines and brain, which was removed by a large steel hook through the nose. These were removed because they hold moisture which causes rotting. Although the heart was left in, because they thought it controlled the body.

Once the body was empty, linen was put into cover the inside of the body, to suck up all the moisture. Now they covered the body with natron, a special mineral salt, and left it for forty days to dry. After drying, the linen was removed and the body was filled with sand, sawdust and spices. So the body would keep it’s shape.

Now the wrapping started which required up to 140m of linen. First the neck and head were wrapped with thin strips of linen. Then the fingers and toes. Next the main body parts were wrapped.

Once the body was fully wrapped, amulets were placed between the wrapping to ward off evil.
As well as a book of spells, in the dead person’s hands. This was because they thought he would need it in the afterlife.

Lastly the body was placed in a tomb to rest till it was ready for the afterlife.

Mummification was a very expensive process, so only the wealthy could have it done.

So is Fanboys

Carmen tsunami explanation writting

Plan

Intro - hook

P 1 - how a tsunami is formed
P 2 - warning signs
P 2 - how to avoid a tsunami
P 3 - damage caused

🌊

A tsunami a long, high sea wave caused by disturbance in the sea. Tsunami in japanese means harbor wave. The wave itself can reach up to 100 ft tall. Here are some interesting and life saving facts about tsunamis. So keep reading.

A tsunami is  energy in the water the reason why the energy is in the ocean is because of :
An undersea volcanic eruption, nuclear bomb, undersea landslide, meteorite and storm surges. The energy in those are enough to form a tsunami. The tsunami will grow bigger when it reaches the shallow water as soon as it gets closer to the surface it will gain height and reach up to 100 ft.

The warning signs for a tsunami are:
The tide will go out faster than usual. The seismograph will detect a tsunami coming and there will be a warning for the community. You’re animal will act out of character (running around like a headless chicken) also the warning boi will detect the movement of the tsunami.

To avoid a tsunami you will need to take lots of  food and water! Blankets and a first aid kits and towels possibly pets  and something that can float. Move up to higher ground  such as a mountain.

The damage caused by a tsunami is that trees will probably be knocked down buildings will be destroyed and cars will be swept out to sea.

Poems to Read
Palm Tree by Philippa Werry SJ P4 N1 2009
Snail by John Malone SJ Sept 2011 L3

Complete the below table.
Analyse the poems to find out what language features are used. Find and show examples.
Decide on and justify what purpose or effect these features had on the poem.

Language Feature
Palm Tree
Snail
Purpose/Effect
Metaphor
Hand full of combs grooming the cloudsA kennelful of shaggy dogs
He is a hoboH is an athleteHe is a hanselHe is a bearHe is a tankHe is a King

He is a hoboMeans that he has no home
The reason why this author wrote some personification  is because he/she wanted to give a human kind of effect.

  1. Compare and contrast: Explain the difference between a simile and a metaphor.

  1. Both of these poems are filled with metaphors, choose one metaphor from each poem and describe what you think it means for the subject of the poem.

He is an athlete
Explain what you think it means
I think it means like the leafs are soft and are in a bunch
It means he faces challenges every day and runs marathons over the T.V

  1. CREATE and APPLY YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Carmen's The butterfly effect

This week the Pukekos have been reading a book called the butterfly effect we had to describe the character. We also had to write the next chapter of the book.

After spraying the cocoon with two cans of fly spray the horrible pale creature dropped out.
It still looked like Mrs Anderson but as a ugly pale bug. I softly yelled “Mrs Anderson is that you?”
No answer.
After a few hours Emily called the pest control. They were late but… Mrs Anderbutterfly thing had escaped out the window but the pest control was trying to track her down.

Finally after a few days pest control found Mrs Anderbutterfly. She had changed Henry yelled quietly “ Mrs Anderson hello??” she replied “GET OUT OF MY FACE KID.” “That was really mean” Emily whispered Mrs anderson truly had changed from strict to really really mean. “Mum had got informed about this! Eventually Mrs Anderbutterfly was set free out into the wild

Carmen's mission bay recount

On the 7th of June hub 8 went on a trip to mission bay beach for our concept learning.
Hope you enjoy my recount writing.
What a mission

Plan
Intro - 5 w’s + hook
1st paragraph - In the hub waiting
2nd paragraph - On the bus
3rd paragraph - Morning tea
4th paragraph -  Sandcastle comp
5th - Waka race
Conclusion
I did not do the rotations

On the 7th of June hub 8 went to Mission bay beach for our concept learning. We had already planned the trip and wrote a letter to Miss Martin did the E.O.T.C  Ram’s rules and all that.

After getting to school late the bell had rung. Hub 8 was very excited to be going on our trip to Mission bay beach! But the bus was late so we played some games to pass the time. We played 20 questions Boys vs Girls and the girls won.

Soon after the bus finally arrived. We all piled on the bus and we were off to the beach. I was seated next to one of the parents Kyle's Mum I wished I could have sat with Curie but I was right at the back of the line and she was at the front. It took about 10 - 15 minutes to get there.

As soon as we got out of the bus it was already morning tea so everyone got out their morning tea and started to munch on their yummy food. We were allowed to play on the Mission bay playground that had swings and a slide and a baby place.

Time to come off the playground and start making our sand castles for the sandcastle comp my group decided we could make a taniwha design in the sand. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, tools down said Whaea Nin our time was up all of us got to look at each others my team won the comp we all got medals. :)

Finally it was time for the waka race I had been looking forward to this for the whole day. I felt like jumping up and down but I couldn't. We placed our waka’s in the fountain and pushed the water to the left. Turns out Yahya’s waka had won the race.

I had lot’s of fun even with my sore ankle. I liked watching the waka’s in the water but that was the end of our trip I hope we can come again.

Carmen's book review

Over the past few days Mrs Parker's literacy group has been doing an activity ... a book review here is my book review.

This is a true story based on war. There's lot’s of new and challenging vocab you could learn in this story.

It’s a very interesting and cool book because you can basically go back to wartime from all the detail. The book explains what war would be like in the olden days. The main character signed the treaty of witangi for his tribe in 1840.

Carmen's science recount

Yesterday we tested out three awesome experiments in the hub for science week the whole hub contributed to the science. Mrs Parker did The fizz inflator Mr Stuart did Dancing raisins and
Whaea Nin did the Incredible Hoop glider. We went around in literacy groups. I will not explain the incredible hoop glider.

Firstly we started off with the Fizz inflator with Mrs Parker. She carefully poured 1/2 cup of vinegar into a bottle with a tablespoon of baking soda in a balloon.  Next we Stretched the balloon over top of the bottle and gently tip the baking soda into liquid and…
The balloon will inflate with carbonic acid gas.
Next we poured some sugar water and a tablespoon of yeast in a bottle and put a balloon on the lid and left it in the sun. Eventually the yeast balloon will inflate.

Soon after the fizz inflator we found ourselves at Mr Stuart's rotation the dancing raisins. Well the raisins didn't  dance but that was okay. First we poured some soda into a clear plastic cup then added six raisins and waited for a long time and only one floated/danced.  :(
Image result for dancing raisins

One more experiment to go the incredible hoop glider. First we made two circles with a small piece of paper and a large. After making the circles we glued the paper circles to a straw the large on the back and the small on the front.

What a fun day I wish our hub could do some more cool science experiments like this.
