Curie's 2016 Literacy Reflection

Today I did a screencastify of me explaining a reflection me telling you two of my favourite pieces of literacy this year. This video will explain to you why I liked it, how this has helped me improve my learning and this is my first time using a blog with a mini group.

Curie's Animal Court Play Reflection

This time in Mrs Parker's Literacy group we had to present plays in separate groups and in my group our play was called The Animal Court. After presenting the plays we had to write or say a reflection of us saying what we need to improve and how.
I need to improve on my posture so I am facing the audience more. The things I did well was having good expression, knowing all my words without looking at the script, I also did a good job at changing my voice in a low tone to show the audience that I was grumpy .

Lights Camera Action: Animal Court

Earlier this term we were practicing our fluency reading aloud with expression. 
We each got a role in a short play from the school journals and had less than one week to practice and present each play. 
We also created our own success criteria to explain just how we would be successful in this task.

We finished off last term with a bang! Well, actually a court session. A court session which involved debating four hot topics which the learners had constructed, researched and planned debates around. 

Each debate lasted 8 - 12 minutes and each team worked together to peer assess the other teams using this rubric.

Curies Should we bugs persuasive writing blog post

For two weeks Mrs Parker's literacy group has been writing to persuade somebody and our topic was should humans eat bugs and we all had two options either to agree or disagree and I chose disagree and wrote down three statements why we should not eat bugs in my opinion. Firstly we had to write a plan about how we will write, After we finished our plans we got started on writing.

Plan:

Point of view- Disagree

Reason 1-It will taste weird.

Reason 2-It may sound healthy but some bugs could could have poison

Reason 3-It can creep you out if you look at it.

Conclusion- This is why.

Writing: Should we eat bugs?

I strongly believe that we should not eat bugs because I think that people eating their pests would be a bit of a scary feeling. I also have three main reasons why people should not eat bugs.

Firstly people now are creating videos about bugs being healthy and nutritious but they're missing the point some bugs could have either been flying or crawling around poisonous stuff such as gas or poisonous mushroom, What if the bugs had tiny pieces of mud on their feet or legs that nobody noticed and created a bug lollipop which would go in somebody’s mouth and that person would have eaten the tiny mud pieces on the bugs leg or feet.

Secondly the bugs will taste really weird when you have it in your mouth. Normally people call bugs as a pest and if someone asked them to eat a bug they would think immediately that the bug is yuck. Although only a few people over the world likes to eat bugs tier could be an undiscovered poison hiding in the bug. I think that eating a bug would taste like puke.

Thirdly most bugs are pests to humans so think about it a human eating a pest would be a nightmare for them even I would be scared to even eat a delicious lollipop with only one tiny ant inside the lollipop. I believe that people who are scared of bugs will be even more scared to even put it in their mouth.

Now this is why I think humans should not eat bugs. I hope these reasons would make you think should humans eat bugs or not?

Curies Sentence Structure

We have been learning about sentence structure and we scimmed and scanned for:

Curies Tsunami explanantion writing

This week we had to write an explanation about a tsunami and find out lots about tsunami, we learned lots of things and put it all together into a explanation.

Writing:Explanation of a tsunami

A tsunami is a japanese word for tidal (harbour) wave. A harbour wave is when a big wave appears than normal waves.

The tsunami is normally created by energy from underwater when either a volcanic eruption, underwater landslide, meteorite, eruption or when a nuclear bomb happens.

When an underwater landslide happens the energy from the movement goes up and gives the wave the energy and that’s how the wave gets big  and turns into a tsunami, Also another way a tsunami can get cause by is a nuclear explosion,  But there are more ways that a tsunami can created by. After the tsunami most things near the harbour would have been destroyed and drowning everything with the harbour.

So when  tsunami is coming you should be ready to leave your house and move to higher ground, normally the things you need to do with your family is learn about where to evacuate the house, listen to the radio and pack lots of needed equipment.

This week Pukeko got to write our own poem abiut anything in this school and I chose a type of furniture that I see everyday everywhere which also come out in different colours

This week Pukeko have been reading a poem called Rain and at the end we got a choice of writing a poem, creating an animation or voice recording us singing the poem in a tune and I chose to create an animation.

Curies The Butterfly Effect

This time The Pukeko group has been reading a book called The Butterfly effect and we did some tasks about the book. While we read this book we learnt about adverbs and what they are. Adverbs are and descrptive verb that ends with an "ly".

On Thursday we had to wright the ending of the story in our own way.:

They didn’t mind waiting at all…

Suddenly Emily and Henry heard a zip sound that whooshed theirs minds of waiting they raised the hands nervously to the mysterious cocoon they had sweat all over their faces they could not wait to get rid of this cruel women.

During that most exciting moment Henry had noticed that the toad Mrs Anderson owned was licking a piece of paper on a wrecked book Emily cautiously stepped forward while Henry held his can of fly spray, Gently Emily flipped over the pages and read them quietly until she stopped and she stood there and froze in shock she dropped her can of fly spray and shut her eyes and the last movement was turning around.

At last she tip toed to Henry and whispered to him everything she had read but Henry was confused so he accidentally blurted out “Butterfly?” but after he said that they both heard a loud zip and then they quickly raised the can of fly spray ready to spray it on Mrs Anderson but suddenly the toad started croaking and they accidentally thought it was Mrs Anderson so they sprayed it on the cocoon instead.

Suddenly it became all foggy in the room and Henry covered his face with his hands so he wouldn’t breathe the gas meanwhile he had realised that Emily had disappeared he called out her name softly until she saw her under the bed, Emily had quickly crawled out of the bed.

Until she saw Mrs Anderson’s head popping out so Emily screamed as Mrs anderson bursted out of the cocoon and she was no longer an old lady she was half butterfly and half human but she had her eyebrow down which meant she was angry and surely she was because she shouted at the kids “How dare you two little brutes sneak in my personal private area you little eggs come here right now!” She shouted across the room as she was flying she was starting to destroy the house Emily screamed to Henry “Henry quickly run and grab our precious stuff hurry” SHe said in a mad rush.

By the time they reached outside the house was broken down they saw Mrs Anderson on the ground with broken wings and messy hair they realised she was gone forever they danced around happy but then their parents car was coming back they got scared so they quickly superglued their desks and found their maths books and found a pen and pencil each so they sat pretending that they didn’t see anything but no luck their parents saw poor Mrs Anderson and said to their kids “You two are grounded until you die” They both said grumpily.

Curies mission bay recount

On the 7th of JUne huub 8 wentto mission bay for our concept learning and when we came back we wrote a recount about mission bya and what we did there.

Now here is my recount plan and writing.

My Writing:

On the 7th of June hub 8 went to Mission Bay for concept because we were learning to collaborate with different people by doing three collaborative activities and they were a sandcastle competition, rotation of three games and a waka race on the fountain.

Firstly we got into our collaborative groups and chose a area in the sand between a tree and a bin our group chose our space next to shells and near the water. I got a little scared because it was extremely cold and the wind was  about to make me fall to the ground so I thought our sandcastles would have cracks and fall down. One person from our group brought along with him three buckets and two spades but it wasn’t enough for everyone so we had to share the equipment. Our team had agreed on building a huge sandcastle but it was too difficult so we decided to build a little kingdom called the hub 8 kingdom which was fantastic we managed to share the buckets and build three towers in the middle of the kingdom which was the royal castle.  After doing the castle I drew a big circle using a spade and told our group that it was the kingdom, next we built single buildings out of sand and decorated the houses with shells and seaweed. Moments later the teachers announced the winner for the competition and the winner was the group that built the Taniwha which looked amazing.

Eventually after having a good time on the playground the next collaborative activity hub 8 did was a rotation of three different games in our gaurdian groups and the games were beach relays, beach flags and beach soccer, Everyone started with their own  guardian teacher which meant our guardian group went with Whaea Nin and she did relays which were actually running relays meanwhile Mr Stuart’s group was doing beach flags and Mrs Parker’s group were doing soccer. Next we went to Mr Stuart and he was doing beach flags it was very simple somebody put down 5 sticks in the sand and six people lay down on the sand and after he said go we run and garb one stick per person the person that did not get a stick loses. Finally we went to do soccer with Mrs Parker we got split into two groups and played Mrs Parker called out a number and that many people ran out to play.

Lastly we did an amazing waka race on the fountain. Everyone that finished making their waka’s placed their waka on the water carefully and we all pushed the the water to the left to help them move better on the water. After a few minutes most of the wakas were floating upside down while the others were fine.

I felt that this trip was a great way to learn how to collaborate with other people than just our friends, I did enjoy most of the activities except the relay because I didn’t understand how that was collaborative and at the same time I did hurt myself real bad but everything else was awesome.

Curies Book Review

The last two weeks Mrs Parker's Literacy group did a book review and a Tic tac toe activity. We read a book of our choice and after reading we did a book review.

The title of the book I read was called The Desert Kaupoi

I enjoyed reading about this book because I got to learn more about world war and about this young soldier named Tony and about his adventures as a soldier.

This activity is when we choose three boxes and we do a book review of a book we read . For this activity we always must do volcabulary and go down, sideway or diagonal I went diagonal and did intresting fact, vocabulary and summary.

Interesting Fact:The most interesting fact I found out was that fighting soldiers was not the only problem insects and stuff carried diseases around too.

I also felt that another interesting fact was I never knew that Germany attacked most of the countries in Europe but didn’t attack the England.

My summary about the book I read:

The book I was reading about told me about this young soldier called Tony he fought in world war 2 in the maori team and he went off to egypt where it was hot and sandy. Tony and the other soldiers were training to become a strong soldier while working in the hot dessert. Tony and his team not only fought against humans but had to fight against the terrible insects that everyday came to the trenches and carried terrible diseases around most of the soldiers. It also told me about what Tony did as a young soldier growing up he got moved around the company’s for example he was in the c company but got moved to the d company where he felt very uncomfortable.

Curies Recount Orginizer

It was national New Zeland Science week and on tuesday we did three science expiriments together as a hub but in our literacy groups, Here is my recount about what we did on tuesday.

On Tuesday the 17th of May 2016 Hub 8 did three science experiments in the hub and got to see and learn how the scientific stuff works. Because it was national science week.

Firstly, we all went in our literacy groups and we went with our literacy teachers first, At the fizz inflator with Mrs Parker we saw two balloons blow up in different ways without blowing it from our mouths the first one we used yeast, baking soda, castor sugar and an empty plastic bottle. Mrs Parker added all the ingredients in the empty bottle on the instruction it said to pour in warm water but Mrs Parker poured in cold water, Next Mrs Parker put a balloon over the bottle and left it on the bench on the window. We left it at the window to let the water get warmer and and after an hour the yeast in the water and gotten bigger and the balloon risen up. Finally it was time for the one with vinegar and baking soda everybody knew that this one would rise up fast and it did, we firstly added the vinegar into another empty bottle and we poured a teaspoon of baking soda into the balloon the last step was to put the balloon on the bottle and she did and all the baking soda poured down into the vinegar and as soon as possible the vinegar and baking soda raised up and the balloon blew up quickly and some of the vinegar got in the balloon.

Secondly, we moved to Mr Stuart and we did dancing raisins which sounded cool but at the end it turned out not so cool because we poured in the soda and we dropped in the raisins but they just sank immediately and did nothing. But then suddenly one came up for a few seconds then sank back down to the bottom of the cup which was very upsetting for our group.

Thirdly, We went with Whaea Nin to do the amazing hoop glider which was fantastic we built our own amazing hoop glider out of straw and paper circles. Firstly we sticked a big circle out of paper strips and we had the choice of hot glueing the paper or sticking with tape. Next we did the same step only with a smaller circle. Fianally we got the straw and sticked it along with the circled strips of paper now its was time to test out our incredible hoop glider.We did a competition to see who's worked the furthest but it was windy so it was very difficult.

Curies How to build your own double waka

This week we have been learning about procedural text and for concept we have been building our own waka's and we took all that we learned about making waka's and put it all into a procedural text with photos.

Equipment:

Two flax stalks

Two kebab sticks

Cardboard

Hot glue gun

A pencil

Scissors

Colouring Pens

Instructions:

Pick up two dry flax stalks and kebab sticks.

Think about where you want to put your sticks.

Glue your sticks on or in the stalk.

Next draw your sail and colour it in.

The next step is to glue our sail on the kebab sticks.

The last step is to leave the waka to dry then you are done.

Curies Dear Diary: Into the jaws of death

We have been learning about anzac wars and what it felt like at war and so we wrote a diary pretending to be one of the soldiers.

Dear Diary

I am having an very hard time working as a soldier in war. There is a huge army of enemies waiting on high land above the sea where we shall fall upon our dead. I have had a hard but enjoyable time working as a soldier we have been sleeping in uncomfortable trenches but we have been having a fun time training with guns and I love having mascots here beside me I feel very safe and brave. Having the mascots with me is very helpful because they always have a happy side somewhere to give to the soldiers .

In April we started learning about anzac stuff because soon it would be anzac day we started learning about mascots at war and we had to make a poster about mascots who helped in war. I found pictures about these brave animals and wrote a description about them in ym own wrods from some facts.

Curie's Sleep Slueths

We have been learning about sleep and how much sleep kids and adults shoud be getting normally.I enjoyed this task because I could learn more about how much people sleep and I learnt that people sleep for one third of the day.

I enjoyed making this video with screencastify because I felt quite nervous using new tools but this tool was quite easy and fun.

This is my two tasks that we had to complete about what we knew about sleep.

This task was quite easy with the book to help but not so easy without the book.
